Types of Hearing Loss

There are four types of hearing loss:

  • Conductive hearing loss: This type is caused by diseases or obstructions to the outer or middle ear. This type of hearing loss usually affects all frequencies of hearing evenly and does not result in severe loss. People with conductive hearing loss can be treated with a hearing aid or can be helped medically or surgically.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: This type is a result from damage to the delicate sensory hair cells of the inner ear or the nerves that supply it. This type of hearing loss can range from mild to profound. It often affects the person's ability to hear certain frequencies more than others. A person with sensorineural hearing loss may perceive distorted sounds, sometimes making the use of hearing aid impossible.
  • Mixed hearing loss: This type of hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural loss which means that there is a problem in both the outer or middle and the inner ear.
  • Central hearing loss: This type of hearing loss is a result from damage or impairment to the nerves or nuclei of the central nervous system, either in the pathways to the brain or in the brain itself.
